Especially millennials. Or at least, that’s what some new information is telling us. The emergence of the color began back in 2012 and continues to brighten our days now in 2017, which is long enough that we have to begin taking note. For those of you that aren’t familiar with the color, it’s a toned down Barbie Pink (very toned down). In fact, it’s so toned down it’s practically pale pink, but it isn’t. It’s Millennial Pink. Of course, the name Millennial Pink wasn’t coined until the summer of 2016, but the color has been around prior to and since then all the same. And yes, colors typically go in and out of style (I’m looking at you, neon anything). But in this case, there’s no end in sight. So why is Millennial Pink all over the place? Basically, it’s because the color sells. According to Fabiana Faria, “We’ve upholstered things in this emerald green that we’re excited about, but it sits there for months. The second I show a pink thing anything it leaves so quickly.” But why pink? For one, pink is now very much androgynous. For another, pink shows up very well in social media filters and is generally neutral appearing. But don’t believe me? Well, Millennial Pink has been everywhere and you probably haven’t even noticed. From fashion week and celebrity wardrobes to new restaurants and night clubs, the color is taking over in terms of marketing, and it’s doing so fairly effectively. Generation Y is obsessed with the color, but what’s the reason behind the obsession? Why can’t we get enough of the color pink? Many say that the color is aesthetically pleasing and even calming, which explains why it’s been used in music videos by Drake and Kanye West in the past, and was most recently in the film, “The Grand Budapest Hotel.” But that’s not the only place that it’s shown up in terms of marketing, it’s everywhere. In ads for clothes, restaurants, fashion boutiques, etc., Millennial Pink is all over the place. And this isn’t the first color to show up out of the blue like this either (pun definitely intended); in the past, we’ve seen an explosion of neon and, more recently, an obsession with icy blues. And while Millennial Pink certainly has that calming, blue undertone, this is anything but just another pale pink; it’s a statement color that’s impacting the way we view branding. We’ve all heard of symbolism and the significance of color in many films, books, and even musical compositions, and color has long been an important aspect of advertisements. Basically, if the ad isn’t visually appealing, and the color doesn’t convey the message, the ad is going to fall flat. With Millennial Pink, companies have discovered a color that speaks to a certain generation, making it very easy to target that audience with minimal effort and cost. However, sometimes introversion can make working with others more taxing, especially when workplace culture has historically celebrated extroversion. In the past, it seemed extroverts were rewarded most in work culture, especially when society’s idea of leadership meant being loud, opinionated, and ‘charismatic’. However, the tides have changed, especially since the use of technology has allowed people to connect in new ways and applauded the skills of people who would rather focus on their own computer most of the work day than spend every hour in face-to-face meetings. Good news! As it turns out, Generation Z’s preferences as the incoming workforce point to a more comfortable world for the introvert. 2018 Career Interest Survey The National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS) offers current research on Generation Z (the generation born between 1996 and 2004) in its 2018 Career Interest Survey. NSHSS has partnered with Hanover Research to produce this study every year since 2015 and gauge the preferences of the most recent incoming workforce. 2018’s study reflects the preferences of over 16,000 ethnically diverse high school and college-aged individuals, representing all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. territories of Guam, American Samoa, Micronesia, Puerto Rico, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Though the study is focused on Gen Z individuals specifically, the preferences found within the study point to a more introvert-friendly workplace culture for all. Meaningful Careers According to the survey, most Gen Z individuals are seeking careers that are not just lucrative but also meaningful. This group of young people demonstrates an interest in social justice and a high-level awareness of issues affecting equality and diversity. An incoming civic-minded workforce will inevitably lead to a fairer and more sensitive workplace based on all kinds of differences between individuals, from race, gender, and sexual orientation to personality traits like introversion and high sensitivity. The more aware the incoming workforce becomes, the more aware employers will have to become in turn to entice them. Work/Life Balance Generation Z preferences demonstrate a commitment to work/life balance and a fulfilling workplace. With the majority of incoming employees expecting fair benefits and vacation time built into their employment plan, employers will need to adapt the culture of their companies if they have not already. Since Generation Z employees report that they are willing to leave a job if it does not meet their standards, employers risk their employees quitting too frequently if they do not listen to these preferences. Though current employees and leaders are already working toward better work/life balance in many circumstances, sometimes a shift in workplace culture is easier to make when new employees come in with their own set of expectations. Introverts can band together with newer employees to support a balanced and enjoyable culture. Moreover, introverted leaders will have the opportunity to tailor their workplace and leadership style to a group committed to enjoying life while also working hard. Focus on STEM-Related Fields Though of course introverts have varying interests and career preferences, the best careers for introverts often allow for less face-to-face time, more solitary work time, and certainly fewer situations in which leading a meeting becomes absolutely necessary. With technology at the forefront of today’s society, introverts are in luck. As the NSHSS 2018 Career Interest Survey demonstrates, members of Generation Z are being encouraged more and more to enter STEM-related fields like engineering and the sciences, and the majority already want to enter the medical or health-related fields. Although all careers will require interaction with others, careers in the sciences and technology-based fields like computer programming allow for more time spent working independently, which will allow introverts time to recharge between meetings. For the rest of the workforce, the trend toward STEM-related jobs suggests that technology is ushering in a type of workplace that promotes high-level focus and independent work just as much as face-to-face interaction. ______ So introverted employees, take heart. A new group will be entering the workforce in the coming years to steer the trend toward a more balanced, meaningful, sensitive, and independent workplace. Check out his review of his school: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options.How urban or safe is the campus?Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Tom: Vassar College is in a small town in upstate New York. The town population is about 44,000, and the college itself hosts about 2,500 students. The campus is relatively small, so students can easily walk to their classes. About one-third of the student population travels by bikes or long boards. However, the school security does provide vehicular transportation on campus, and students can take advantage of that if they need to carry heavy packages across campus. Every Saturday, the school runs shuttles to the local mall, and students can take cabs to the local train station if they want to go to New York City. VT:How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Tom: A majority of the professors have office hours, and they encourage students to visit them and ask them any questions that come to mind. I have gone to many professors during their office hours, and I left with my questions answered each time. Furthermore, professors encourage you to email them and set up appointments with them if the office hours are inconvenient. Some will even write you a lengthy email to answer your questions when appointments cannot be scheduled! We also have a Writing Center and a Quantitative Reasoning Center (Q-Center) to help students with writing and quantitative assignments. Students who have been approved by the faculty run shifts in the Writing Center and Q-Center, and they will answer any questions you may have and help you improve, all free of charge. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Tom: The dorm life is very different from when I was at home. Getting used to the existence of a roommate and sharing a bathroom with ten other people took some time to adjust to, but it also allowed me to build friendships in a whole new way. From awkward encounters to group dinners to late night star-gazing, two semesters of my freshman year felt like a decade spent with the best people. As far as dining goes, it is good, but nothing like home. My dad is Chinese and a very enthusiastic cook. He constantly thinks of new dishes to make and always surprises me with delicious meals. This, however, spoiled me and gave me a very high standard with food. While the school cafeteria has a lot of options and changes its menu from day to day, it is still a bit dull for me. On the plus side, students are elected to join the food committee, and they ask the kitchen to make adjustments according to student suggestions. This allows our voice to be heard, and it makes amazing things like late nigh t smoothies possible. Lastly, there are tons of clubs on campus, and they cover almost any hobbies you may have. If you manage to find the club you are enthusiastic about, there are lots of people there to share your passion. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported?What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Tom: Music and arts are very big at Vassar College, and it seems like everyone is super talented in one way or another. I chose to major in chemistry because it has always been a passion of mine, and the faculty does its best to support me. My adviser told me all the classes I should take to obtain the degree, as well as showed me how to spread it out throughout my college years. She suggested programs I could apply to to gain more experience in the field. She even talked about her time management skills and taught me how to make the most of my time. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Tom: Vassar College is Greek-free. During orientation week, we were essentially forced to attend a plethora of events and activities to meet others. After the events, our resident assistant (RA) gathered all the freshmen on the floor to do icebreakers and get to know everyone. The clubs were very welcoming, and it was fairly easy to just go to a club, get to know the people in it, and start doing whatever it is they meet to do. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Tom: The Career Center is quite helpful. They have many internship opportunities and will show you what you need to do to qualify for them. They even send emails to every student, and they encourage students to visit the Career Center to learn more about what they do. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Tom: Most public spaces are spacious, as there are not that many students on campus. It is easy to find a quiet place to study. The library may be more crowded on Sunday nights, as papers and exam due dates approach, and it is usually full the week before final exams as everyone prepare for death week. Dorm lounges are equipped with giant flat-screen televisions, and all you have to do to use it is reserve a time period 24 hours prior to useor simply turn it on when no one else has reserved it. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between?To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Tom: The town can be called tiny, and there is almost nothing to do. I have plenty of things to keep me entertained on campus, so I rarely leave campus. But New York City is two hours away, so a lot of my friends will spend a weekend in the city to eat and play. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Tom: There are about 2,500 students at Vassar College, and I am pleased with the typical class sizes. I chose to go to a smaller school so I would not be overwhelmed by a big campus and a huge student body. While some students complain that it is awkward to run into someone they might not want to see, it does make it easier to build friendships. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Tom: I took a class called Bones, Bodies, and Forensics, and it was everything I expected. We read news articles about murders, suicides, and accidental deaths; analyzed evidence from controversial cases and debated on the verdict; and wrote papers on the application and misconceptions of forensic anthropology. I remember the professor taught us that each person has a unique sternum and that she has the ability to identify a person just through his or her sternum. Check out Toms tutoring profile.
